HHS Homecoming Game Ends in Disappointment

Herndon loses to Robinson on Homecoming weekend, 56-38

The Herndon Hornets (2-6) may have matched up perfectly against Robinson (3-5) on paper, but unfortunately the game was played on the field. The Hornets rattled off an impressive 35-points in the second half, but it would not prove enough as the Rams had pushed Herndon into a huge hole during the first two quarters of play to eventually spoil the Hornets’ Homecoming, 56-38.

Herndon fought its way back from a 28-3 deficit at the start of the third quarter. Josh Schow took the reigns and plowed his way through the Rams defense for 174 yards and four touchdowns (39, 29, 32, 3) on the ground, averaging an almost unheard of 11.5 yards per carry. Ky Parrott had 144 all-purpose yards at quarterback and Darrius Hicks continued his impressive role in relief of Schow, with 39 yards at almost five yards a clip. Hicks also caught two balls for 29 yards, including a five-yard touchdown strike from back-up quarterback Zach Goldsby in the fourth quarter.

The short passing game proved effective at times for the Hornets as junior receivers Austin Schnarrs and Denzel Weaver lead the team with 3 receptions each, for 34 and 20 yards respectively.

Robinson scored just once in the first quarter as Herndon’s defense kept the team in the game. But running back Tyrek Worrell turned on the afterburners driving the Rams down field and scoring four of Robinson’s eight touchdowns against the Hornets. Robinson had three backs rush for more than 100 yards but Worrell lead his squad with 213 of the Rams 554 total yards on offense.

Now, the Hornets must gather themselves to host the 5-3 Chantilly Chargers, who once hoped to finish the season unbeaten. In two weeks, Herndon must travel to Westfield High and confront an undefeated, explosive and surging Bulldog team in the final game of the regular season.

The gloves are off and Herndon must go all-in and break the bank. Whatever happens, the fans will be cheering for their beloved Hornets and will show their pride in this town and its schools. The football team and school staff hold this pride as well. Herndon High’s Director of Student Activities Jonathan Frohm had this to say about the game.

“We give credit to Robinson. The final score had them on top. Our kids fought back and put points in the board, and we are proud of their commitment to the game,” Frohm said in a written statement after the game. “We won’t ever lay down—Herndon’s kids are tough and we expect that. Today’s game mattered to us all and we are not content with the outcome. We move on to play Chantilly and Westfield. We will not hide from any opponent. That is our message.”

Herndon plays at home against Chantilly (5-3) at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 28.
