HHS Football Summary: Hornets Dominate W&L to End Drought

Hornets Earn Second Win, Forcing Generals to Surrender, 47-27

After the Herndon Hornet varsity football team (2-5) recorded a season-high 41 points against Oakton last week, albeit in a one-point loss, fans wondered how Herndon would respond in Friday night’s match up against Washington and Lee (2-5).

Hornets’ Head Coach Joe Sheaffer, in an interview earlier in the week, told Patch he “felt frustrated for the kids because they are really working hard and improving each week.” Sheaffer added that his players have kept a positive mindset in spite of the tough run and that is what it would take to eventually “put them in a position to win.” Well, the Hornets made their coach proud and responded by posting a new season-high score in a dominant win over the Generals, 47-27.

Josh Schow, one of the top performing running backs in the Concorde District, depleted the Generals’ defensive front, gashing them for 120 yards on 20 carries and three of Herndon’s five touchdowns on the ground (51,79,39) to lead Herndon to its second win of the season.

Quarterback Ky Parrott started behind center once again after sitting out last week’s game due to a minor injury. Parrott returned in top form to manage an excellent game for the Hornets and displayed much improved accuracy in his passing game, completing 7 of 9 for 109 yards and two TDs (16,6) to give his offense its most well balanced performance of the season.

The Hornet defense, led by linebacker Chris Glazier, has been consistent with takeaways throughout the season and recovered three Washington and Lee turnovers Friday, while Herndon’s offense gave up just one. The Hornets have tackled well as of late and held Washington and Lee to a less than mediocre 48-yard rushing performance. Growth is evident in the youthful Herndon squad as more and more players up their production each week. Hornet running back Darius Hicks toted the rock for 56 yards on 7 carries and two TDs of 15 and 37 yards. Hicks has also become a great asset for Herndon catching balls out of the backfield this season and hauled in two big-play grabs for a team-high 77 yards against the Generals.

Herndon has already doubled its win total from the 2010 season with three regular season games still remaining on the calendar. Next up is Homecoming weekend when Herndon will face a hungry Robinson Rams team (2-5) that is also coming off their second win of the year - last Friday night against lake Braddock, 27-7.

Herndon plays its Homecoming game against Robinson at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.
