HHS Baseball Defeats SLHS 13-3 in Season Opener

There was huge turnout for the South Lakes baseball opener vs. Herndon High High School Friday night.

The South Lakes Seahawks varsity baseball team kicked off its 2012 season Friday night against crosstown rival Herndon High. The rain cleared and the stands were packed with a large contingent of fans including students and little leaguers. Herndon Optimist Youth Baseball was well represented with many alumni participating from both teams.

Herndon jumped out on top in the second inning after a 3-run homer by Austin Schnarrs. Herndon tacked on another run in the third, and senior Addison Wright was cruising, allowing no hits through 4.2 innings. South Lakes battled back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th, all with 2 outs. Junior Hayden Hall started the rally with a double and senior Ryan Forrest added a key RBI single. South Lakes senior Billy McLaughlin pitched a great game, going 6 strong innings. Unfortunately for South Lakes, the wheels came off in the 7th inning and the barn-burner turned into a 13-3 win for Herndon.

This was the first of four Free Admission Fridays at South Lakes where kids wearing their team jersey (Little League, Cal Ripken) or South Lakes blue and green are admitted free with a paying adult. The next South Lakes Free Admission Friday is this coming Friday, March 23rd against Jefferson. Also, mark your calendar for Youth Baseball Night on April 13th where players not only get into the game for free, but can enjoy special activities and gifts.
