Herndon Middle School Gets Donation of 1,200 New Books

At a book giveaway party by Books for America in the school's library, teachers were allowed to take as many as they wanted for their classes.

It was like Christmas for the teachers at Herndon Middle School on Thursday, when Books for America delivered a donation of 1,200 new, age-appropriate books for their classrooms.

At a book giveaway party in the library, the HMS teachers were allowed to browse and pick out as many books as they liked for their classrooms as well as to use as class rewards or incentives, or to let students keep to encourage reading at home.

Books for America Founder and President Steve Hersey said, "We are very pleased to be able to support the students and educators at Herndon Middle School, and we plan to continue this support in the future."

Books for America depends on books donated by the public to use in its programs.

"We take books donated by the public and use them to build and improve reading libraries in local D.C.-area schools and shelters," Hersey explained. "We need every book we can get - both children's books and books for adults."

Hersey said Books for America has a home pickup service available for Northern Virginia homes and businesses interested in donating books.
