After a big 86-64 home-win against the Annandale Atoms last Wednesday night to improve to 2-1, the Hornets’ boys varsity basketball team suffered a tough road-loss to J.E.B. Stuart on Friday, 64-57.
The boys have played strong in all four games led by sophomore Dorian Johnson, who scored 29 points against the Atoms and 25 versus the Raiders. Johnson leads the squad averaging 20.5 points-per-game, followed by senior Patrick McLaughlin with 15.3. DeAndre Thomas has shown consistency on both sides of the ball for Herndon, averaging 14 points-per-game.
Coach Chris Whelan said defense is the heart and soul of this 2011 Hornet squad. His boys have done a decent job backing up that statement, allowing an average of 64 points. Meanwhile Herndon’s offense, while potent at times, has struggled on occasion. The team has ping-ponged back and forth, scoring 67, 49, 86 and 57 points in their first four games of the season. It is a young Hornet team still finding its rhythm, which Whelan said will take some time.
Herndon hosts the Lake Braddock Bruins Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m.
Wrestling team comes up just short of victory
Although the Herndon varsity wrestling team’s record may look bleak at 0-5, the Hornets have battled with heart. Coach Mike Gonzales' boys came within a takedown here, or a reverse there of winning their last two meets.
Herndon lost to both Dominion 36-42 and to Freedom High Saturday, 39-40. Dante Walker (120lbs.), Gabe Pike (126 lbs.) Sean Pike (132 lbs.) and Bassam Estwani (152 lbs.) each pinned their respective Dominion opponent to give the Hornets a 24-18 lead midway through the meet.
Herndon’s Dan Walker (160 lbs.) and Beau Shull (106 lbs.) both won by forfeit but it would not suffice as Dominion bounced back in the heavier weight classes with five-straight pins to defeat Herndon by six points.
The Freedom meet was even closer - but not in the beginning. Herndon trailed 18-0 when Dante Walker pinned his opponent and put the Hornets on the board with six huge points Herndon’s Khaled Moustafa (182 lbs.) and Andrew Healy (220 lbs.) each won by pin and pulled within one point of Freedom.
The Hornets wrestle at the Sterling Lions Invitational at Park View High on Dec. 17.
Indoor Track Team already advances two to postseason competition
The Herndon Hornet varsity Indoor Track team traveled to Episcopal on Dec. 3 for its first league meet of the season. Coach Peter Sherry said he was impressed with performances by Carina Peter and Austin Miller.
In 2010, Peter qualified for Northern Regional competition in the 300-meter and states in the 55-meter. Meanwhile Miller pole-vaulted his way to a regional spot as well with a vault of 12-feet-6, the regional standard, Sherry said.
Patch will update the progress of the HHS track team to come in following weeks, as its structure and schedule differs from that of other winter sports teams.
Swim team and Gymnastics
The Herndon High varsity Swim and Dive team and the Gymnastics team will be included in next week’s recap.
