Herndon High Recognized for Sports Safety

25 high schools across Fairfax County received the award.

Herndon High is one of 25 high schools in Fairfax County recently recognized by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) for sports safety.

Herndon High was awarded the Safe Sports School Award from NATA, for taking several steps toward keeping its athletes free from sports injuries, the Fairfax County public school board (FCPS) announced last week.

Herndon High and the other 24 county high schools were all given "first team" designation for the award, meaning that the schools have all followed every protocol given to them to ensure athlete safety.

Safe Sports School award winning schools must satisfy all of the following criteria to be considered for an award:

  • Created a comprehensive athletic health care administrative system to ensure the safety of student athletes.
  • Provided or coordinated pre-participation physical examinations.
  • Promoted safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities.
  • Planned for the selection, fit, function, and proper maintenance of athletic equipment.
  • Provided a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes.
  • Developed injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions.
  • Provided or facilitated injury intervention.
  • Organized and rehearsed venue-specific emergency plans.
  • Provided or facilitated psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling and education.
  • Educated athletes and their parents about the potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities.
