This year the students, staff, administration and community have been celebrating Herndon Elementary School's 50 years of educating Herndon's children.

Herndon Elementary School has been spending this year celebrating its 50th anniversary and on May 1 the school held a celebration.

The event included local representatives such as Del. Tom Rust, Herndon Mayor Steve DeBenedittis, school alumni, Fairfax County school board member Janie Strauss, and an original HES administrator, Elma Mankin, according to the Connection Newspapers.

Mankin told stories about how the school has changed since its opening in 1961, including that women in that era began wearing pants to work and the end of segregation in schools. Mankin said the school also used to serve lunches made from scratch by the town’s best cooks, reported the Connection.
