FCPS Holds Resource Fair for Students In Need of Support After Graduation

Fair provides resources on living and working independently to parents of students with intellectual disabilities

Moving on to Life in the Community: A Resource Fair of Vocational, Residential, Independent Living, Leisure and Recreation, and Advocacy Options, will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Robinson Secondary School.

The fair, cosponsored by Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Career and Transition Services, helps parents plan for the future of students, due to intellectual disabilities, will require ongoing supports to live and work independently after they graduate from high school.

Information will be provided on vocational, residential, advocacy, and recreational resources.  Highlights include:

  • An overview of funding resources provided by Alan Wooten, program manager, Fairfax–Falls Church Community Services Board, intellectual disability services; and Jane Bennett, human resources manager, Fairfax Office of the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services.
  • An overview of Medicaid waivers by Kymberly DeLoatche from the Autism Society of Northern Virginia.
  • An overview of Social Security work incentives by Marilyn Morrison of vaACCSES.
  • Information on financial estate planning from Pearl Hartley of the Washington Group.

The resource fair, featuring more than 50 area vendors and agencies, will be available from 10 a.m. to noon. Representatives from residential and vocational vendors, the Social Security Administration, Medicaid, and other agencies, including Fairfax County Therapeutic Recreation, the ENDependence Center, People First, MetroAccess, and Special Olympics will be available to answer questions and provide information.

A panel of graduates and parents will provide personal accounts of their experiences accessing services and community resources.

Cosponsors of the fair include the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services (DRS), Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board - Intellectual Disability Services (CSB-ID), the Coalition of Nonprofit Providers, and the Arc of Northern Virginia.
