Town Passes 2012 Budget, Decreases Real Estate Tax Rate, Increases Meals Tax Rate

The Herndon Town Council adopted the $45.2 million 2012 budget at its meeting Tuesday night.

The Council lowered the town’s real estate tax rate from $.2675 to $.265 per $100 of assessed value. This means the average homeowner in the town will pay about $40.29 more for their taxes this year.

Additionally, the Council . The increase in revenue from the meals tax will help fund four items, including major road repaving on Herndon Parkway, helping fund a future downtown parking garage, utility undergrounding in the downtown, and promotion of the town’s restaurants.

This year the budget provides transitional funding for the Neighborhood Resource Center, which will be operated by Fairfax County beginning in October 2011. The budget will also restore some programs that were removed in the 2011 budget, including the town’s participation in National Night Out and entertainment at the town’s Fourth of July celebration.

The town’s 2012 fiscal year begins on July 1, 2011 and ends on June 30, 2012. The adopted budget will be posted on the town’s website by July 1.
