Merkel Announces Candidacy for Mayor

Vice Mayor Lisa Merkel announced her plans to run for mayor in the upcoming election.

Vice Mayor Lisa Merkel announced her plans to run for mayor on Monday, Jan. 16.

Merkel said as mayor she will continue to focus on the critical issues she has focused on as vice mayor. "These include implementing the Town's Economic Development initiative, planning appropriately for the diverse needs of both the Metro Station Area and our Downtown, while maintaining Town services and safety in our neighborhoods," she said.

Merkel said Herndon is the gem of the Dulles corridor and is simply waiting to be discovered by those looking to start their families, businesses or retirements here. She said she looks forward to a challenging and cordial campaign season.

Now that it's 2012, local residents can expect to see more of those planning to run for council or mayor collecting signatures to get on the ballot. The election will take place on Tuesday, May 1, 2012.

Congratulations, Lisa! Best of luck in your candidacy for Mayor. I have appreciated your leadership as Vice Mayor thus far, and I look forward to your continued leadership as Mayor!

I am glad to see one person has already announced her candidacy. I am looking forward to seeing who else will announce a run for Mayor of Herndon.

I believe Councilman Bill Tirrell is collecting signatures to run for mayor, but I haven't seen a formal announcement from him yet. I'll post something when anyone else announces they're running.

Lisa has shown a deep interest in Herndon since she moved here. She'll make an excellent mayor, I believe.

My wife, born and raised in Herndon, balked at Lisa Merkel running. I asked why, and she said she'd skip out on town meetings using her kids as an excuse.

I’d really like to see Councilmember Singh run for Mayor. His dedication, hard work, and analytical skills are unmatched among the Councilmembers, as demonstrated during the recent Drainseville Road traffic improvements issue and the ongoing Metro Area Planning issue.

Hm-m-m. I don’t recall anyone ever questioning whether or not Mayor DeBenedittis would skip out on town meetings due to his two young kids. Vice Mayor Merkel has been a responsible, active member of council who not only attends council meetings, but also meets with county officials, visiting state officials, town staff, and a wide variety of town events. Try to keep up with her! :-)

I am glad that LISA MERKEL is running for Mayor. She is an excellent Vice Mayor and booster for Herndon. I attend lots of Council meetings and find that she consistently does her homework on all issues. She reaches out to persons at all levels in other jurisdictions to work on behalf of our town. She was a constant force in pushing until a sign was put up at the future Metro site in Herndon. If elected, she will be an outstanding Mayor.

Mike - What do you yourself think? Also, I can't help but wonder: Has your wife kept a record of whether Ms Merkel has been absent more often than any of the other Town Council members, since she became Vice Mayor?

Lisa Merkel, like other successful working parents has a strong network of support. To suggest that she would not take her duties as mayor seriously is really insulting to women in leadership positions and working moms in general. Over the past two years she (like the current mayor who also has small children) has been able to manage her commitments very successfully. Would you really suggest that her status as a mother should disqualify her? Lisa Merkel is a pragmatic, consensus builder with a common sense point of view. She does her homework and she listens well. And, she is a fabulous mom and role model as well.

Wow, I did not know that Lisa worked outside of the home. I thought she was a stay-at-home mom (a tough job in and of itself), and a member of the Council. My hat is off to her!

Mike, to date Lisa Merkel has not 'skipped out on town meetings using her kids as an excuse', her record should speak for it's self. Having lived in the town since 1990 and seeing many council members serve with children this doesn't seem to be a reason to vote FOR or NOT vote for someone running for office. Having council members that are at different stages in their family life brings various points of view, which are held by the voters of our town. I'm supporting Lisa for Mayor, not because she has small children, because she will represent the town well. She, in my opinion, takes her position on the council very seriously.

Although I'm not sure referring to her as a stay-at-home mom is accurate given how active she is, Lisa left her teaching job when her first child was born.

Seems to me that Lisa has been very dedicated to her position on Herndon's Council. Agree with her or disagree, but let's not drag the 2012 Herndon election into the gutter, let's discuss real issues.
Ruth Tatlock January 29, 2012 at 09:38 PM
Totally agree with Bob Bruhns. There have also been some unnecessary comments about Mr. Tirrell. Nitpicking is not needed, nor desirable

Thank you for this reminder Bob!

Lisa Merkel is one of the hardest working elected Town officials I have ever had the pleasure to work with in my 40+ years of elected and volunteer service in Herndon. She has a vision for our town and has worked tirelessly for Herndon during her term as Vice Mayor. Plus, she has the full support of her husband, Dave. She will be a GREAT Mayor!! - Richard Downer
