Herndon’s Proposed 2013 Budget Released

The Herndon Town Council will hold public hearings on the proposed budget on April 10 and April 24.

Herndon Town Manager Art Anselene has proposed a budget for fiscal year 2013 of $46,116,950. The budget is a 1.9 percent increase over the 2012 budget.

“In this period of continued economic recovery and stabilization, the town’s proposed budget provides the fiscal resources to further the Town Council’s vision for redevelopment of the downtown, transit-oriented development in the future Metrorail area and other major capital projects, as well as continuation of the services and programs our citizens expect and enjoy,” said Anselene in a press release.                  

Some of the 2013 budget highlights include:
• Maintains the town real estate tax, meals tax and all other taxes and levies at their current levels.
• Continues allocation of resources to strategic capital projects such as major road improvements, downtown redevelopment and Metro planning.
• Continues targeted allocation of the , to support downtown utility relocation, major road repaving, future funding of a downtown parking garage and targeted promotion of the town’s restaurant industry.
• Implements strategies recommended by the town’s Economic Development Task Force, including a branding initiative for the town.
• Increases personnel costs to include a 2 percent cost of living adjustment for all employees, with a continued freeze on merit pay increases, as well as increased costs for funding retirement and life insurance benefits.

The 2013 budget has an accompanying Facts-at-a-Glance document with more information. The complete budget is available at www.herndon-va.gov, and hard copies are available for review at the Herndon Municipal Center and the Herndon Fortnightly Library. All town residents and businesses will receive a guide to the proposed budget from the town in the mail.

The Herndon Town Council will hold two public hearings on the budget, including on Tuesday, April 10 and Tuesday, April 24. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. at the Mary Ingram Council Chambers, 765 Lynn St. Herndon residents and business owners can submit comments on the budget online at www.herndon-va.gov or by email to budget@herndon-va.gov
