Herndon's New Mayor, Council Sworn in Thursday

Members of Herndon's 2012-2014 Town Council took their oaths of office on Thursday evening at the Herndon Municipal Center.

Lisa Merkel was sworn in as the new mayor of Herndon on Thursday evening, calling her service "an honor and a privilege." 

The was filled with a standing-room only crowd of supporters for the new council. Town Clerk Viki Wellershaus administered the oath of office. The new council includes Connie Haines Hutchinson, Melissa Jonas, Dave Kirby, Sheila Olem, Charlie Waddell and Grace Han Wolf. 

“Herndon is the gem of the Dulles Corridor,” Merkel said in her remarks immediately following the swearing-in. “Our history, our charm, our sense of community defines us and sets us apart.”

As a self-governed town, Merkel said, “we control our destiny and have the power to set the stage for the 21st century. Your Mayor and Town Council are passionate about maintaining Herndon’s unique, small-town character while capitalizing on the many opportunities before us.”

Merkel said her priorities are focused on the revitalization of downtown Herndon, planning for Metrorail, and working to attract and retain businesses. She encouraged Herndon's residents to get involved in town issues. “Call us, email us, Facebook us—after all, we are working for you,” she said.

Merkel thanked outgoing Mayor Steve DeBenedittis for his dedicated service to Herndon's residents during the past six years.

The new members of Herndon's Town Council take office on July 1, 2012. Their first work session will be held Tuesday, July 3, and the first public hearing will be held Tuesday, July 10. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. in the Ingram Council Chambers, located at 765 Lynn St. 

Merkel will hold regular office hours on Monday evenings at the , 730 Elden St. She will also be available by appointment. Herndon residents and business owners can contact the Town Clerk's Office to schedule meetings, at town.clerk@herndon-va.gov or 703-435-6805.
