The United States Postal Service and the US Department of State are holding Passport Day in the USA 2013 on March 9, and Herndon's Post Office is taking part in the event.
The day offers a chance for people to apply for or renew their passports without having to make an appointment. Several Northern Virginia Post Offices will be participating.
"This is a great opportunity for Northern Virginia residents planning to travel outside the United States to apply for a passport without making a reservation," said Northern Virginia Retail Manager Sarah Berg in a USPS press release.
Since 2009, Americans have been required to present a valid passport when traveling back into the US from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.
The Herndon Post Office at 590 Grove Street will be participating from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9.
Those applying for their passport should bring:
• A completed passport application
The application can be completed online through the State Department website, or print it and complete it by hand. New applications, renewals, name changes or corrections, and lost or stolen passports each require a different application.
• Two types of identification with copies of each
Applicants need one piece of identification proving US citizenship (previously issued undamaged US Passport, certified birth certificate, consular report of birth abroad or birth certificate, naturalization certificate or certificate of citizenship).
Applicants also need one current piece of identification (previously issued undamaged passport, naturalization certificate, valid drivers license, current government or military identification)
• One passport photo
Applicants should bring a color photo of themselves taken in the last six months. It should be 2" x 2" with the full face shown from the front. The head should measure between 1" and 1 3/8", and the background should be plain white or off white. For an additional fee, some Post Offices can take your photo for you.
• Payment for applicable fees
Applicants should bring a credit card, check or money order to pay for passport fees. A regular adult passport costs $110 with an additional $25 execution fee. Click here to see all possible passport fees.
