Herndon Earns Green Government Certification

The town has been recognized for its achievement in having environmentally friendly policies and actions

Members of Herndon's Town Council and Mayor Steve DeBenedittis accepted the Virginia Municipal League's Go Green Virginia Green Government certification at VML's annual conference.

The program recognizes municipalities that work to implement environmentally friendly and "green" policies and actions. Herndon's Green Government Challenge was executed by the town's Department of Public Works and initiatives taken by the town include the adoption of an energy conservation resolution, the creatin of an energy improvment plan, establishing a community-wide recycling program, implementing a tree planting and preservation program and more. VML, along with the Virginia Association of Countries and the Virginia School Boards Association, instituted the Green Government Challenge in 2008 as a way to encourage the implementation of environmental policies and actions that reduce carbon emissions generated by local governments and communities. Herndon's first year participating in the program was 2011, but many of the environmentally friendly initiatives on the town's Green Government Challenge application had been underway previously.
