Herndon DPW Advises Residents on Hazardous Waste Disposal

The Town of Herndon launched a new page on its website informing residents of proper disposal of hazardous waste products.

The Town of Herndon's Department of Public Works is asking residents and businesses to properly dispose of common hazardous materials.

The DPW has a new page on the town's website that defines hazardous waste products for Herndon residents, which includes household cleaners, yard care products, paints, paint thinners, petroleum products, rodent poisons and other many commonly used products. The website emphasizes why proper disposal of hazardous products is critical.

“Sanitation workers can be injured from toxins, corrosive materials or ignitable materials improperly mixed with regular solid waste,” said Robert B. Boxer, director of Public Works in a press release. “Additionally, improper dumping of these materials on the ground or in waterways can threaten wildlife.”

DPW says the safest way for town residents to dispose of hazardous waste is to carefully package and transport the materials to Fairfax County's Household Hazardous Waste site at the I-66 Transfer Station Complex, 4816 West Ox Rd., in Fairfax. The site is open from Thursday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The town's website also includes information on ways residents can reduce the amount of hazardous products they use by switching to safer alternatives, purchasing only the amount needed, and by storing the products appropriately.
