Herndon Council Preview: Town to Honor Lt. Keys, Collect 2014 Budget Input

The Council will vote on a zoning ordinance text amendment on the establishment and demolition of historic district landmarks, buildings and structures.

The Herndon Town Council will honor Jerry S. Keys of the Herndon Police Department with a Certificate of Appreciation for his 33 years of service to the town at tonight's public hearing. 

Additional presentations at tonight's meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Ingram Council Chambers, include recognizing the graduates of the 18th session of the Herndon Citizens Police Academy and a proclamation for Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week, which takes place March 11-17. 

The first public hearing item is a resolution to collect input on the 2014 budget from Herndon residents and business owners. Those interested are encouraged to comment on town services and programs they find valuable.

The Herndon Town Council will discuss and vote on a zoning ordinance text amendment to update the town’s ordinance on the demolition of historic district landmarks, buildings or structures tonight. The amendment updates the town’s ordinance to bring it into compliance with Virginia State Code. 

The council will also vote on a contract to sell 532 square feet of Town real estate on the north side of the Herndon Commerce Center building to be used as a planting strip.

The town would retain public easements for the improvement of the downtown streetscape and other public municipal uses. The Herndon Commerce Center plans to install windows on the parking lot side of the building.

The town will receive $17,290 for the piece of land, which is the appraised value.

Other agenda items for tonight's public hearing include:

• An ordinance granting a 20-year Franchise to Verizon Virginia, LLC for the location of telecommunications facilities within the Town’s public streets and public places.

• A resolution authorizing the submission of a local government grant application to the Virginia Commission for the Arts Challenge Grant.

• A resolution authorizing the Town of Herndon’s application for re-certification for the Crime Prevention Community Program.

• A resolution to award a contract to Geotechnical Engineering and Construction Materials Testing and Inspection Services.

The public hearing begins at 7 p.m. at the Ingram Council Chambers, 765 Lynn St., in downtown Herndon.
