Herndon Changes Congressional Districts

Many Herndon-area residents received new voter registration cards letting them know their new congressional district.

Most residents in Herndon have received or will receive new voter registration cards because they have a new congressman.

The 10th and 11th congressional districts have had big changes, as the entire town of Herndon, once in Rep. Frank Wolf's (R) 10th district, is now in Rep. Gerry Connolly's (D) 11th district. Also moving into the 11th district are the Oak Hill area and Reston.

Redistricting is done every 10 years after the US Census is completed to help ensure districts are as equal in population totals as possible. About 195,000 voters in Fairfax County now live in a new congressional district.

The new voter identification cards are only being mailed to voters impacted by the redistricting. Voters affected by redistricting will receive a new card indicating the change in congressional representation.

The place where registered voters go to the polls remains unchanged.

In other election/voter matters:

Transition to Registered Voter Number - Some voters still hold a voter information card, which includes their Social Security Number (SSN). The State Board of Elections also mailed new voter information cards to those voters, replacing the Social Security Number with a system-generated identification number.

If you have not received a new card, but would like to check your voter registration status and information, go to the Virginia State Board of Elections.

In addition, the new cards indicate a language preference. As a result of the 2010 Census, it was determined that Fairfax County now falls under Section 203 of the Voting Rights Act. This requires Fairfax County to provide voting and elections-related materials in English and Spanish.
