Herndon Appoints New Public Works Superintendent

Charles Kemp has been promoted as the superintendent of the town's Public Works department.

Bob Boxer, director of Public Works for the Town of Herndon, announced that Charles Kemp has been promoted as the superintendent of the town’s Public Works department. 

Kemp has been serving as acting superintendent since the town’s longtime superintendent, Sonny Lynch, left in July 2011.

Kemp joined the town’s Public Works department in 1986 as an engineering technician and has held positions of increasing responsibility ever since. He has served as the Public Works department’s general services administrator since 1993.

As superintendent Kemp will direct the department’s field and emergency operations, including snow removal, refuse and recycling collection, infrastructure maintenance, and management of the field operations staff. He’ll report to Michael Doi, deputy director of the Public Works department.

Kemp has a number of professional certifications relevant to his work in the department. He has completed coursework in construction management and drafting at Frederick Community College and the Maryland Drafting Institute.

“It is always gratifying when the right candidate for a key position comes from within our ranks,” said Boxer in a press release from the Town of Herndon. 

“Charlie Kemp has demonstrated a high degree of professionalism, service orientation and management capability throughout the years of his association with the town,” Boxer said. “The town’s field operations are in good hands with Charlie at the helm.”
