There's a lot going on in town right now, so we thought we'd go through a quick rundown of the top five things town residents need to know. For more information, visit the Town of Herndon's website or call them at 703-435-6800.

1. The town of Herndon will be completing its annual flushing of water hydrants throughout the town.
Starting on April 4 and lasting about three weeks, residents may see hydrant flushing on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hydrant flushing in commercial areas will take place on weekdays from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Those who have town water may notice a slight discoloration, odor or chlorine taste—all of which are temporary and harmless. Users are advised to run cold water prior to use and to store drinking water in open containers in their refrigerators. Contact the Department of Public Works at 703-435-5850 or e-mail public.works@herndon-va.gov.

3. The town has released its concrete replacement, milling and paving schedule for the spring. The annual concrete replacement and asphalt repaving project takes place each year and helps improve the safety and condition of town streets.

Paving began March 28 and will impact the following roads: Bayshire Lane, Bayshire Place, Benicia Lane, Broad Oaks Drive, Cuzco Court, Dulles Place, Haley Place, Hillwood Court, Longfellow Court, Oakshire Court and Page Court.

During these operations access and parking on these streets will be restricted. The town will provide notices to homes and no parking signs will be posted. Use alternate routes when work is being done to avoid delays.

Contact the Department of Public Works at 703-435-5850 or e-mail public.works@herndon-va.gov, or visit the town’s website for further updates.

Items that can be picked up include appliances with the doors removed, furniture, vehicle parts and plumbing fixtures under 50 pounds, up to two tires per household, and a limited amount of building materials totaling one cubic yard with lengths not to exceed four feet.

Yard waste, auto parts weighing more than 50 pounds, large quantities of building materials and household hazardous waste will not be picked up.

Items should be placed out on the curb by 7 a.m. on your designated trash day no earlier than 24 hours prior to trash pick up. Contact the Department of Public Works at 703-435-5850 or e-mail public.works@herndon-va.gov for more information.
