Sign Up for the Herndon 2011 Citizens Police Academy

The program helps area residents understand how local policing works and how to keep their communities safe

Local residents can register for the 17th session of the Herndon Citizens' Police academy.

The academy sessons run for 11 weeks beginning in early September and running through mid-November. The sessions meet on Wednesday nights from 7-9 p.m. at the Herndon Police Department, 397 Herndon Parkway. One class will be held on a Saturday for firearms training.

Participants must be at least 18 years old and have no prior criminal record. Participants do not need to live in the town limits, but Town of Herndon residents will receive first consideration for the program.

The Herndon Citizens' Police Academy helps give area residents a better understanding of police operations in the Town of Herndon. The course is conducted by police officers from the Herndon Police Department and representatives from the Fairfax County Judicial System.

Class topics include criminal investigations, community policing, traffic enforcement, firearms training, K-9 units, crime scene investigation, general district court and gang activity. Sessions include classroom presentations, "on-street" demonstrations, a tour of the Fairfax County jail, a trip to a firearms range and the chance to ride along with an officer on patrol.
