Police Identify Man Found in Herndon

A neighbor called police after spotting a body in the creek.

Herndon Police have identified the man whose body was found in the creek near Center and Locust streets early Friday morning.

According to police, the man was 30-year-old Damien Patrick Scanlan of Herndon.

Police said a neighbor called police around 8 a.m. Friday morning after spotting what appeared to be a body in the creek near Center and Locust. Officers responded to the area and confirmed that there was the body of a deceased male in the creek.

Public information officer Lt. Jim Moore said Scanlan's cause of death is still being investigated by the medical examiner, though the preliminary investigation by police did not reveal foul play.

Social media posts by friends Friday describe Scanlan as a sweet and funny man who worked at O'Sullivan's Irish Pub in downtown Herndon, and was originally from Ireland.

Police are still asking for the public's help in piecing together Scanlan's last hours.

"The Herndon Police Department is looking for information related to this case from Mr. Scanlan’s friends and/or from the public who may have observed Mr. Scanlan in the local establishments last night," Moore said in a statement late Friday night. "Additionally, the police are looking for anyone who may have heard or witnessed anything [between Thursday night and Friday morning] in the area of Center Street and Locust Street between the hours of midnight and 8 a.m. this morning."

Call the Herndon Police Department at 703-435-6881 ext. 2332, or Detective Diaz at 703-435-2990.
