Police Give Condition Report on Cyclist Shot in Herndon by Stray Bullet

Cyclist was shot Saturday night.

The man shot in the stomach by a stray bullet in Herndon is still hospitalized, police said Monday, but he is expected to recover from his injuries.

The man, who police have not identified, was riding his bike on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of Summerfield at about 7 p.m. Saturday.

A gun that a man was loading in a nearby house fired, striking the cyclist.

"Barring anything that they don't anticipate, he should make it through this," Herndon Police LT. Ron Thunman said.

The man who fired the gun was identified by police as John E. Albers, 49, of Herndon.

Albers did not know the cyclist, police have said.

Albers was charged with willfully discharging a firearm in a public place resulting in bodily injury. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
