The fire extended into the roof and attic area as well. After firefighters had the fire extinguished, they discovered the dead body of a man. His identity has not yet been released.

The woman was reportedly a cat breeder, and the couple owned 37 cats. WTOP reports that fire officials and animal control workers have been working to round up the cats from throughout the neighborhood.

The fire department says it has recovered 25 of the 37 cats.

Damage to the home is estimated at around $175,000.
