UPDATED: Suspect in Police Custody After Activity at Van Buren & Spring Street

Locals on social media were reporting helicopters, K9 units and police officers with guns pulled in front of a home.

UPDATE 3:52 P.M.:  A suspect who evaded police was the cause of major police activity Wednesday afternoon in the area of Van Buren and Spring streets in Herndon.

Lt. Jim Moore of the Herndon Police Department told Patch that Fairfax County Police had contacted them asking for assistance when a suspect they were surveilling for multiple outstanding felony warrants spotted police and fled into Herndon.

Moore told Patch that, despite rumors and suspicions on social media, the suspect did not have a gun or any other kind of weapon.

Moore said County police were watching the wanted man when he spotted police and took off running. County police and Herndon police then deployed multiple officers, a helicopter and K-9 units to hunt the man down.

The man was arrested by Herndon police around 3 p.m. and is now back in custody.

Fairfax County Police told Patch that the entire incident took only 15 minutes and that "no one was ever in any danger," which is why no notifications were sent out to the community or local schools.

Fairfax County Police said the man's identity has not yet been released because the man's arrest is still being processed, but that the felony warrants out for his arrest were for burglary and grand larceny.

Lt. Jim Moore of the Herndon Police Department told Patch that Fairfax County Police had contacted them asking for assistance when a suspect they had arrested for multiple outstanding felony warrants escaped their custody and fled into Herndon.

Social media is currently a-buzz with chatter about major police activity in the area of Van Buren and Spring Street in Herndon.

Twitter users are trading messages about a possible gunman and warning anyone near the area of Herndon Middle School at 901 Locust St. to "get inside a building and stay there."
