HPD Encourages Drivers to Click It or Ticket

HPD is cracking down on seat belt use

The Herndon Police department is joining local and national law enforcement organizations and highway safety advocates for the 2011 national Click It or Ticket campaign.

Police officers throughout Virginia will be cracking down on drivers who aren’t wearing their seat belts, during the day and night.

Traffic-related fatalities have been declining in Virginia. In 2010 there were 740 accident-related deaths. Of those, about 314 people were not restrained by seat belts.

Those in pickup trucks have been proven to be less likely to buckle up than any other vehicle passenger. In 2010 Old Dominion University held a Seat Belt Use Observational Study that found the average seat belt use rate of occupants of pickup trucks was 71.4 percent, compared to the state’s overall use rate of 80.5 percent.

“We need to continue to make the case that seat belts really do work,” said Chief Toussaint E. Summers, Jr. in a press release. “We will do that by hitting the roads and enforcing all traffic laws 24/7, no excuses, no warnings, and we will be paying particular attention to seat belt use.”

The Click It or Ticket campaign will be held from May 22 to June 6. Drivers should remember to buckle up and encourage friends, family and loved ones to do the same.
