"hacked into their Xbox Live account" and they called local herndon police? I hope they contacted Microsoft and the FBI beforehand...I can see the HP just throwing their arms in the air on that one :)

Yeah, it seems silly, but I think it's usually recommended to file a police report just so there's documentation of it. I had the same thought when I saw it though.

So odd to see XBOX hacked in a Herndon Police report. I can tell you at least 5 people in Herndon that have had that happen to them in the last 6 months (including us) just from what my kids have told me happened to their friends. While it's a pain working through the correct channels to get yourself back online, I am certain the HPD have better things to handle. Wow. I really hope we don't see more of these "reports" now in the crime log.

I guess it's similar in some ways, though not as critical as the incident in the Bruin District of a social security number being used by an unknown subject to report income to the IRS.

Like Leslie said, documentation. If, for example, the xbox owner has his credit card info stored on his account and the person responsible for hacking his xbox logs into his account from a different xbox and purchases games, the victim may be able to have the purchases revoked and his money returned.
