Herndon Police Report: Two Businesses Report Utility Bill Scams

Two Herndon businesses reported receiving fraudulent calls for utility bills.

The Herndon Police Department reported the following incidents from Jan. 7 through Jan. 13, 2013. The following information was supplied by the Herndon Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction. 

BRUIN DISTRICT
• The victim reported their residence was entered between 3:30 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. and their laptop computer was reported stolen on Jan. 8 in the 500 block of Florida Avenue.
• A vehicle was entered between 10 p.m. on Jan. 7 and 8 a.m. on Jan. 10 and a wallet was reported stolen in the 12000 block of Alton Square. The wallet was later recovered in the bushes outside the building with cash and a credit card was missing from the inside.
• Graffiti was reported found in the area at 4:49 p.m. on Jan. 9 in the 12000 block of Worldgate Drive.

GOLF COURSE DISTRICT
• The victim reported their shoes were stolen while they were attending a class between 8:30 p.m. and 9:55 p.m. on Jan. 9 in the 800 block of Ferndale Avenue.
• A 42-year-old Herndon man was arrested for brandishing a machete at 7:45 p.m. on Jan. 11 in the 1100 block of Dublin Place.

HALEY SMITH DISTRICT
• Several employees reported money stolen from their purses at their place of employment at 10:40 a.m. on Jan. 7 in the 500 block of Grove Street.
• The victim reported their vehicle was entered and several medications were stolen at 11:39 a.m. on Jan. 7 in the 400 block of Elden Street.
• A subject attempted to shoplift a box of condoms from a business at 5:32 p.m. on Jan. 7 in the 400 block of Elden Street.
• A vehicle was entered and an iPhone was reported stolen at 7:24 p.m. on Jan. 7 in the 300 block of Woodgrove Court.
• A subject shoplifted DVDs from a business at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 10 in the 700 block of Van Buren Street.
• A 31-year-old Annandale man was arrested for larceny as well as on an outstanding warrant out of Arlington County at 7:21 p.m. on Jan. 10 in the 400 block of Elden Street.
• The lock on a utility room door was damaged between 1:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. on Jan. 7 in the 400 block of Elden Street.
• An unknown subject is using business accounts to scam victims out of money via the internet at 10:40 a.m. on Jan. 8 in the 500 block of Grove Street.
• An unknown subject called a business in order to have them pay a delinquent power bill, upon checking with their power company the manager determined the call was fraudulent at 5:42 p.m. on Jan. 11 in the 400 block of Elden Street. 

RUNNYMEDE DISTRICT
• The victim reported an acquaintance assaulted her and stole her ring from her finger before fleeing the residence at 11:38 p.m. on Jan. 13 in the 900 block of Leona Lane.
• A 52-year-old Herndon man was arrested for assault at 3:02 a.m. on Jan. 8 in the 900 block of Park Avenue.
• A 25-year-old Reston man was arrested for being drunk in public at 3:47 a.m. on Jan. 12 in the 900 block of Station Street.
• A 27-year-old man with no fixed address was arrested for being drunk in public at 8:35 p.m. on Jan. 13 in the 600 block of Center Street.
• The owner of a business reported an employee stealing money from a company account at 11:17 a.m. on Jan. 10 in the 900 block of Station Street.
• A 28-year-old Herndon man was arrested for driving on a revoked license at 12 p.m. on Jan. 12 in the 900 block of Station Street.

CENTER DISTRICT
• A 37-year-old Fairfax man was arrested for being drunk in public and trespassing at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 10 in the 1200 block of Elden Street.
• A vehicle was entered and a GPS unit was reported stolen at 2:37 a.m. on Jan. 13 in the 1200 block of Elden Street.
• The victim reported sending money to an unknown subject to pay for a delinquent power bill. Upon checking with the power company the manager determined the call was fraudulent at 12:51 p.m. on Jan. 9 in the 1000 block of Elden Street. 

OTHER INCIDENTS
• A 47-year-old Sterling man was arrested for driving while intoxicated at 1:49 a.m. on Jan. 7 in the 900 block of Herndon Parkway.
• A 46-year-old Reston man was arrested for driving while intoxicated at 1:44 a.m. on Jan. 13 in the 500 block of Early Fall Court.
• A 30-year-old Herndon man was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Prince William County at 11:10 a.m. on Jan. 7 in the 1000 block of Saber Lane.
• Herndon Police reported the following traffic incidents from Jan. 7-13: two incidents of driving under the influence, 47 incidents of speeding, one incident of no operators license, three incidents of driving while on a suspended or revoked license, and 38 incidents of expired or no Town of Herndon sticker.

APPLICATIONS BEING ACCEPTED FOR HPD 2013 YOUTH POLICE ACADEMY
The Herndon Police Department is currently accepting applications for the 2013 Youth Police Academy. The YPA will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evenings from March 7 through April 11.
