Herndon Police Release 2010 Annual Crime Report

Crime in the Town of Herndon was down in 2010 compared to 2009

In 2010 the Herndon police department received 26,246 calls for service, gave out 7,888 traffic tickets and made 643 arrests.

The town’s 2010 Annual Police Report was posted today, detailing the policing statistics of the last year. Overall, crime was down in 2010 compared to 2009.

With 365 incidents, larcenies make up the majority of the Group A offenses that happened in 2010 at 31 percent. Larceny was followed by assaults, 273 incidents, and destruction of property, 266 incidents, which each made up 23 percent of crime in 2010.

Other crimes included fraud, 83 incidents, drug and narcotic violations, 60 incidents, burglary, 39 incidents, counterfeiting, 25 incidents, and small numbers of the following offenses: sex offenses, motor vehicle theft, robbery, abduction, weapons violations, stolen property offenses and obscene material.

The number of Group A offenses has decreased since 2009, dropping from 1,305 to 1,170 in 2010. The number of Group A offenses that were resolved increased from 30.2 percent in 2009 to 38 percent in 2010.

The highest Group B offense in 2010 was drunkenness. The 157 total incidents make up 45 percent of the Group B offenses, followed by driving under the influence at 82 offenses and 23 percent of the total.

Other Group B offenses included liquor law violations, 28 incidents, trespassing, 26 incidents, disorderly conduct, 16 incidents, bad checks, 3 incidents, runaways, 3 incidents, and 35 other offenses. Group B offenses were down from 447 in 2009 to 350 in 2010.

The police department also participates in the 287(g) program, which allowed trained officers to perform some of the duties of immigration officers. There were 114 total investigations and 62 detainers issued in 2010. Comparatively, in 2009 there were 189 investigations and 106 detainers issued.

The top three locations in town with the highest number of accidents in 2010 included the 600 block of Elden Street, with 30 accidents, the intersection of Elden Street and Herndon Parkway-East with 19 accidents and the intersection of Sterling Road and Herndon Parkway with 17 accidents.

Rounding out the top five were the intersection of Spring Street and Herndon Parkway with 15 accidents and the intersection of Worldgate Drive and Elden Street with 9 accidents.

Traffic accidents increased from 584 in 2009 to 610 in 2010. Driving under the influence arrests and alcohol related accidents were both down. DUIs were down from 95 in 2009 to 87 in 2010, while alcohol related accidents were down from 39 in 2009 to 27 in 2010.
