Herndon Family Found Dead Was Friendly, Neighbors Say

Husband, wife and two school-aged children discovered Tuesday in a Point Rider Lane home

Herndon, VA — Herndon's Point Rider Lane neighborhood is reeling Tuesday after learning a family of four was found dead inside a home there this morning.

Police were called out to the home in the 13300 block of Point Rider Lane at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to do a welfare check on the family after a coworker of one of the adults notified police they hadn’t been to work Monday or Tuesday, police said.

Police breached the home at about noon and found the bodies of two adults and two Fairfax County school aged-children, Fairfax County Police Spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell said.

Caldwell said they have not released a cause of death and next of kin has not yet been notified. She said the preliminary investigation has found no threat to the community.

Neighbors say the family that lived in the home was friendly and helpful, sometimes helping clear snow after a storm and always waving.

Ed Swanson Jr., a neighbor of six years, said he’s shocked something like this happened in the community. He said the husband was a "good guy" who was helpful and the neighborhood "has been awesome."

Another neighbor, Sherry Webster, said her son had been friends with the family’s two boys when they were younger. She said it will be difficult to tell her son what happened.

Webster said the parents were outgoing, neighborly, and a cute couple.

“She was full of energy,” she said of the wife.

Patch will follow this story and provide more information as it becomes available.

Wow.... This is a tragedy no matter the cause. It could be a carbon monoxide gas leak or something else. This line of comments really worries me about the mental state of the people walking around in this world. Time to have some compassion no matter what the cause and stop shooting first and evaluate the facts before letting the ugly comments fly....

F. Hussein, I totally agree the THE TRUTH IS THE TRUTH. LIES and GREED are SOCIETIES two worst enemies! We all need to come together and make AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! My thoughts and condolences go out to the relatives of these people.

No one in their right mind cares to listen to you. you use a family tragedy to evoke a political message is pure ignorance. No one cares about political issues at this moment and time.

No one has said it was foul play, It is possible carbon monoxide from a malfunctioning heater killed them. Don't jump to conclusions. So lets leave god and politics out of it for now.

Well I see that it could e true espesially if the family was living in poverty, realizing who the president is and knowing it dont really make a diffrence whos the president. america is ruined and for some it seems hopeless well for instance my family . was layed off, homes in forclosure, and we are poor right here in the good ol usa. should we suffer some more or go to e with the lord? maybe if yas lived in our shoes you could see how very ignorant yall are being to reality open your eyes and see the p oor all around you.

My thought and prayers are with their family members. Loosing a loved one regardless of how it happened is never easy. It is even harder when people find it "appropriate" to make ignorant comments, instead of just paying their respect for the ones who are gone. May God forgive you all

I agree with you darrell. You didn't hear this tragic stuff when Bush was in office!

GOD BLESS THE DECEASED IN HERNDON! and GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I do not understand why Republicans are bringing politics into a family tragedy ... have I misunderstood this article? Parents have been known to kill their families for many reasons, none of which have to do with the "economy." I'm so sad that posters making political commentary are so myopic .... should I define "myopic" for these people?

FACT: US Military Suicide Rate higher under Obama than was for Bush Posted in the Crossville Forum

Deborah - I agree - people are desperate - and things like this are happening all over American. The middle class is struggling to survive - and fall between the cracks when it comes to getting any sort of aid from our government - the rich get richer, the poor get their share, but the middle class are finding no refuge ...
Anita September 26, 2012 at 12:34 AM
ITS A SHAME! There are more suicides under obama than there was with Bush!
Kitzer September 26, 2012 at 12:37 AM
Why do you not just 'click on flag as abusive' and be done with the idiot!! That's what it is there for!!

I hope this one, of many precious families ,that have been lost to us in these excrutiating times of financial hell , wars, hatred, wreckless abandon, predjudice, hunger, worry, bullying, and all the rest, can now R.I.P. Now, it is up to the living to make sure we can get back to a place were all is not lost. We loved you and yours and you will be sorely missed, sorry it had to end like this

I am so sad by all these comments about political crap. My first thought after reading this was to hug my child and my family the second thing was to say a prayer for that family. I just can't believe how ignorant and thoughtless people can be at such a heart breaking situation. God bless that family and their family

How in the world is this tragedy the President of the United States' fault??? It just amazes me how people are, number one: so ill informed. President Obama DID NOT create the state of the union; he inherited it from Bush and has been fighting an uphill battle ever since taking office to fix it. The House Republicans shoot him down at every turn! WAKE UP! READ! COMPARE! INVESTIGATE! before you judge. AND number two: didn't you read; CAUSE OF DEATH UNKNOWN????? So, how is it Obama's fault? HUH? My prayers to friends and family and God speed.
S Smith September 26, 2012 at 12:47 AM
Thank you, Erica! What a shame some of these readers are posting such inappropriate words! How would they feel if such a terrible thing happened to them? What a sad tragedy for this family and their loved ones!

Here, here, Pua!
Barbara Manlower September 26, 2012 at 12:48 AM
If the authorities are saying there is no danger to the community then unfortunately its a murder/suicide....no other explanation except who killed whom...its the mother or the father who committed the murders, the kids are the victims...its looking like the economy played a role in this. What a tragedy.
hampton Short September 26, 2012 at 12:49 AM
Right, right...
Tony N. September 26, 2012 at 12:49 AM
Pua, Evidently you're a democrat, but we are all AMERICANS. How many definitions of myopic would you like?
T.J.Bowen September 26, 2012 at 12:50 AM
Uh, from reading the article, I see no cause of death or contributing factors that led to this senseless death. I have plenty of financial woes but I don't blame them on the government. Time to stand up and take blame for our own problems instead of laying them at someone else's door step.
beaglelovr September 26, 2012 at 12:51 AM
A picture of the home, the state, city, and address given in the story. Then they say the nexct of kin had not been notified!!! This is unbelievable...no respect given to people anymore!!
Frances Pentland September 26, 2012 at 12:52 AM
Lots of these comments are just more examples of the lack of compassion we ALL face every single day. This is a story of a tragic loss of life. Nothing more, nothing less. Stop wasting time working to infuriate others and spend that same amt of time praying for the families of these people. They have a horrible situation to deal with. God bless them.
s. james September 26, 2012 at 12:53 AM
My condolences to the families. So sorry for you loss. GBYA.
Steely September 26, 2012 at 12:54 AM
How dare anyone even think to bring politics into such a tragedy? It's not ignorant, it shows a lack of empathy. How? How is it even possible to bring in politics with this? Who would care about such a thing when people have died? It's a very upsetting and tragic situation, nothing more and nothing less. Please stop trying to twist it into something it's not!
TeeTee September 26, 2012 at 12:55 AM
You are screaming about the truth the truth and the only truth that matters is that a family has just experienced a horrific loss and your prejudice toward Obama seems to be the only truth that is showing at this point. Let us all remember this family in there time of extreme sorrow. Shut up about Obama, no one man can fix this country it takes a joint effort from all parties in the government to achieve this goal. If you are saying one man didn't kill osama than that one person can not heal this country we have to do it together and bashing one another is not how to do it.

F. Hussein: This is not the time or place 4 U, or your stupid comments. Please try & "Be upper-crust", & have some respect 4 the topic @ hand. It's so loudly obvious 2 all that hear U; that U R 1 of the many that have been entitled/afforded because of the complextion of your skin, & most diffinantly not because of the "content of your character"!
