Police: Man Forced Out of Herndon Standoff With Pepper Gas

The man who allegedly pointed a gun at police during a standoff Monday night in Herndon was ultimately forced out of his home using non-lethal pepper gas, Fairfax County police say, and is now being treated at a local hospital.

On Tuesday, hours after the standoff ended, Fairfax County Police Department continued to release additional information on the police standoff in the 1500 block of Youngs Point Place.

FCPD Spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell told Patch the standoff began when police responded to a distraught man just before 5 p.m. Monday.

A concerned family member had been in the home with the man at the time of the call, but then left to meet with officers when they arrived at the home.

Officers attempted to speak with the man, but he refused, ordered them to leave and allegedly showed them he was armed and pointed a gun at them.

Throughout the evening and into the early morning hours, deploying a variety of resources to the home and neighborhood, including SWAT teams, Caldwell said. He continued to refuse to come out.

Negotiators eventually established a dialogue with him, though he still refused to surrender. Sometime around 2 a.m. non-lethal pepper gas was deployed inside the home. The gas forced the man out of the home and police took him into custody. 

He was taken to Reston Hospital, where he has remained Tuesday in non life-threatening condition. Police obtained a warrant for assault on a law enforcement officer. It's not clear when that alleged assault may have occurred. 

Caldwell said no gunshots were fired during the standoff and there were no hostages involved, but the man was a threat to himself and potentially others because of his weapon.
