Fake Grenade Found in Vehicle Shuts Down Route 28

Route 28 was shut down in both directions near Route 606 for about three hours Wednesday night because of a fake grenade found in a car that was involved in an accident.

Route 28 was closed in both directions Wednesday night near Route 606 after police found what was thought to be a grenade in a vehicle invovled in an accident. 

It turns out the grenade was fake. At about 6:25 p.m. Loudoun County Sheriffs Deputies responded to a rear-end collision on northbound 28. As the accident was being cleared, a Loudoun County volunteer firefighter saw what seemed to be a grenade in one of the vehicles. 

As a precaution police shut down Route 28 in both directions and the Loudoun County Sheriffs Office, Loudoun County Fire-Rescue, the Loudoun County Bomb Squad and Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office investigated the device.

The item was found to be a replica of a grenade and was deemed harmless. Route 28 reopened in both directions at about 9:30 p.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Details will be released as they become available.
