Fairfax Police Officers Awarded for Helicopter Rescue

The three officers saved two young boys who had gone missing in the woods near their home.

Three officers from Fairfax County Police Department’s Helicopter Unit were awarded for rescuing two boys.

Pilot Garrett Wymer, master police officer Paul DeHaven and police officer first class Timothy Schilling were given the Crawford Air Crew of the Year Award this week.

The incident took place on January 25 in Spotsylvania, Va., according to a press release from the Fairfax County Police Department. Two brothers, 5 and 10 years old, went out to play in the snow with their dog in the backyard when the boys went missing, police said.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to help search for the boys in the dense woods surrounding the family home, police said. The “Fairfax One” helicopter was brought into help, and they found the boys using an infrared camera.
