Cyclist Shot in Herndon by Stray Bullet

Police say the bullet came from a nearby house.

A man riding his bike on Summerfield Drive was shot in the stomach Saturday by a gun that fired while its owner was loading it in a nearby house, police said.

Officers responded to a call that a shot had been fired in the 1200 block of Summerfield at about 7 p.m., according to  news release from Herdon Police Lt. Jim Moore.

When police arrived, they found a man with a bullet wound to the stomach. He was taken to a nearby hospital and was undergoing surgery last night, according to police. His condition is unknown.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that a gun was discharged from inside a house and the bullet struck a passing cyclist," Moore said in the news release.

The man who fired the gun was identified as John E. Albers, 49, of Herndon.

Albers did not know the cyclist, Moore said in the release.

Albers was charged with willfully discharging a firearm in a public place resulting in bodily injury. Albers was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
