One of the most accurate accounts of the differences between Democrats and Republicans is the metaphor : “When a Democrat climbs the ladder of success, he reaches down to help the next person up.  When a Republican climbs the ladder of success, he pulls the ladder up behind him.” How better to describe Republican reluctance to expand food stamps for children, extend unemployment benefits for long-term unemployed, offer affordable health insurance to the uninsured, or raise the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation?  So which one are you, really?

Ridiculous and untrue. Liberal Democratic policies and programs have kept the poor in their station for 50 years, witness LBJ's Great Society. Despite throwing trillions of dollars at such programs, the poverty rate has remained unchanged and has actually risen under Obama. We in the Republican Party call these "facts". I see that they are unfamiliar to you.

It isn't the ladder of success that Democrats are climbing it is the unemployment merry go round. The Democrats want you to think you're going somewhere but you're being taken round in circles. In every city that Democrats have had a strangle hold of it is a disaster. If Detroit is what you want to live in vote Democrat Party. They have a party you get stuck with the trash.

The original posting and the comments so far are what's wrong with this country. None of the views are accurate. The truth of course lies somewhere in the middle. One party blaming the other for all of our woes is patently absurd and shows how little you know about how government is run. Republicans must do a better job of helping the poor and the Democrats must do a better job of helping figure out how to shrink a massively bloated Federal Government.

If it is accuracy you wish then let us consider how Govt. should be run.-------------- Helping individuals is the job of individuals and local groups and originations. What the Fed. Government should concentrate on is performing the things that the Constitution says it has the responsibility to take care of. There is actually a list in article 1 section 8. That is all the US Congress is allowed to do. Period! If the Govt. focused on its job we could go about our jobs. Interference from the Govt., that we witness from the Dems. and more and more from the Repubs, is what is the cause of most of the troubles in the economy and the road blocks of success for the poor. ----------- Let's stop trying to run the Govt. the way you think it should be run and run it like it is legal to run it.

Well gee, thanks Dave for the civics lesson. I would put my knowledge of "how the governments works" against yours any day. Your view is " splitting the baby". Sometimes, you actually have to take a stand for your beliefs. In the meantime, keep straddling that fence. That way you never have to choose the hard fight, and, hey, you'll never be wrong. Good luck with that.
Dave Edwards January 21, 2014 at 12:53 PM
My point was regarding the "blame game" that both sides play. It was not specifically about the role of Federal Government. I do agree with you it has overstepped it's reach in some areas.
Keith Bolcar January 21, 2014 at 01:23 PM
I don't play the blame game. I speak out against what I think is wrong, and stand up for what I think is right. We are in a battle for the soul of our country right now. I fo

I plan to keep on swinging. And I could care less what anyone else thinks. The politically correct crowd has controlled the dialogue for too long, and it's time to say enough. That's how you change things.
Dave Edwards January 21, 2014 at 01:32 PM
The hard fight IS straddling the fence and trying to solve our problems. The easy route is entrenching yourself in partisan politics and complaining about how everybody else is wrong and you are right. That way you never have to come up with solutions, you can just blame the other side. The Tea Party and the extreme left are poster children for this approach.
Keith Bolcar January 21, 2014 at 01:48 PM
No way Dave. Fence straddlers don't take the hard stand. You seem to be a nice guy, but some battles are fought in trenches. If you aren't up for standing up for your beliefs, you are no where. Don't take the soft approach, because no one respects that.

"The ultimate determinate in the struggle now going on for the world will not be bombs and rockets but a test of wills and ideas - a trial of spiritual resolve; the values we hold, the beliefs we cherish and the ideas to which we are dedicated." Ronald Reagan
