Chickens Coming Home to Roost

I was under the impression that our town council was determined to gentrify Herndon.  To make Herndon a place where people will want to come by bringing in new business, art centers, restaurants  and more. We don't want Herndon thought of as a hick town.

Before making the new age hippies, or whatever they might call themselves these days, happy, maybe we should think of the consequences first.

Raising chickens is not an inexpensive hobby.  They do carry disease, they do need proper housing and veterinary care. Other cities are having problems with chickens abandoned by no longer interested owners.  Our shelters are already overrun by cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rabbits and all the other pets people get tired of, and probably do not have room for chickens .

The next news flash might just be Chickens Run Amuck in Herndon!

Hawaii , Miami, Key West, and Lakeland, Florida, just to name a few, are overrun with feral chickens and are now paying the cost of ridding themselves of this problem.

Herndon is a town, not a farm.  You were most likely aware that you were not out in the country when you bought property here. If you want to raise chickens, goats or whatever else  your little heart's desire, maybe you should move to the country!  Backyard chickens are not a good idea.

Yes, there were chickens, cows, goats and pigs in Herndon in the past, but there we also hard working farmers, not folks playing at being farmers without getting their hands dirty.
