Lesley Buckingham, the coach of the Herndon High varsity girls' lacrosse team, sent a letter to the local community on behalf of Herndon High's lacrosse coaches, informing everyone of his passing, on Monday.
"I am very sad to inform everyone about the loss of a great man, Lou Petersen.
Lou was the commissioner of The Herndon Youth Lacrosse League and a huge advocate for the growth of Herndon High School's lacrosse programs. Lou was one of HHS Lacrosse's biggest fans - he will be remembered and missed in the stands at every one of our games.
He has touched so many athletes' lives by giving kids the opportunity to succeed in a thriving lacrosse environment. His hard work and passion showed every day, especially when the young girls took the field in the spring.
In his most recent efforts he was beginning to build a young 5- and 6-year-old 'team,' through which he hoped to start kids off young in order to become better competitors at a later age. This is just a small reflection on how passionate and driven he was to make Herndon lacrosse grow.
Lou will be missed and the Petersen family will be in all of our thoughts and prayers.
I dedicate this upcoming girls' lacrosse season to Lou Petersen - our biggest fan.
Rest in peace Lou Peterson....
With much love,
Coach Buckingham, Coach Cassara, and Coach Chris"
A viewing will be held for Petersen this Thursday, 7-9 p.m., followed by a viewing and funeral services beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday, all at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Herndon.
