Moving Will Change Your Life

Moving, sorting and memories.

In just two weeks, my husband and I went through every inch of our house, staging it to sell. We loaded two 'valets' utterly and completely full, to the point I was wedging things into it. Let me say this first: sorting, purging, helping people declutter is what I do. I am CDO-Chef DeClutter Officer-of Leave it to Lisa, LLC. So I know my home wasn't crazy full. There were things we have needed to donate for awhile... who has time for that? I’m busy helping my clients with their stuff. We are moving because we have no basement and we would like some more space to spread out, as it were. My business is expanding; we will begin consigning clients’ items that they no longer have use for. And that takes space.

I am a master at finding and making space for things myself and my clients want to keep. When I meet with a client, one of the first things I say is, "I am not here to throw out anything you want to keep. We will find a good place for everything, as long as it is safe."

Here is a comment a neighbor made when watching all our belongings come out of our house, "Your house is like a clown house. Stuff just keeps coming out and I have no idea where it all could have been."

We have had to be ruthless. We have been diligent. We have donated more than four van full’s worth of "good stuff" (as my Dad would have said). What it comes down to is this; we all have memories attached to certain items. I noticed I was holding on to things from another time, another life, another Lisa. I made a choice of what I wanted to live with now and they reflect who I am now not the person I was five, 10, even 20 years ago. Sure I kept some specials from the past, of course. And those things I cherish much more because I chose to keep each one.

Keep it simple,
