I Am Not my Stuff

In George Carlin's own words: "That's all your house is - it's a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff."

I was working with a very insightful and intelligent client and the other day, and as she was looking at ALL her stuff, she said "I am not my stuff, I am not my stuff!" At first I giggled a bit because she was being silly. Then I thought about the comment itself.

"Maybe this is it; do people have so much stuff to make themselves feel good? Feel vital? Feel powerful? Feel successful? Worthy, even?" Why does the need for and acquiring of "stuff" help us believe those things? Can we be as impressive to our neighbors by having less stuff? And why do we have to impress our neighbors? Living with less stuff, gives us more time, more space and more freedom. I say impress yourself. After all...you are not your stuff.

In George Carlin's own words... On "stuff"

"That's all your house is—it's a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff. Now sometimes—sometimes you gotta move. You gotta get a bigger house. Why? Too much stuff. You've gotta move all your stuff, and maybe put some of your stuff in storage. Imagine that: there's a whole industry based on keeping an eye on your stuff."
