Cooking in the Community
Herndon, what do you want to cook? Before you grab your apron, let us know what dishes you want to learn to cook at the Herndon Community Center.
Hello Herndon,
My name is Leanne Guido and I’ve been teaching cooking classes at the Herndon Community Center for seven years. I’d love to know what Herndon residents want to cook. It’s time for me to create the schedule for the fall session (I know school’s not even out yet) and I’d appreciate your input. We have classes for all ages.
Children’s classes are for ages six to twelve. Past classes have included spaghetti pie, which the student bakes at home to share with their family. Nothing wrong with adding “making dinner” to the kid chore list. Other popular classes have been “Green is Good” where we make pesto, herbed potatoes and a healthy but very green smoothie. In our “Thanksgiving Trio” class the students make all things turkey including wraps, tenders and for a sweet treat, turkey cookies.
I started out teaching only children’s cooking classes when an eleven year old boy said, “My mom needs to take this class.” That was the start of the adult/child cooking classes offered on Friday nights. In our last class, we made pizza burgers, fruit salad and chicken fingers. The eating was good that night. Kindergartner, Stephanie, finished off her pizza burger in record time. So if you come to class, bring your appetite!
This fall I will be teaching a few adult classes, including “Fish Three Ways” and “Cooking for One.” Here’s your chance to tell me want you want to cook! Please comment on the types of cooking classes you would be interested in taking at your Herndon Community Center. I hope to cook with you soon.
