Grilling Has Gone to the Dogs

Simple ideas to help keep your furry friend safe during the summer grilling season.

Today is officially the first day of summer, and that means it is time to break out the grill.  If you're hosting or attending a barbeque this weekend, of course you want your dog to join you. A relaxing afternoon with family, friends, and great food wouldn't be complete without your four-legged friend. Create an enjoyable atmosphere for all attendees, including your dog!

Grill Safety

Keep your dog clear of not only the grill itself, but any associated items. Charcoal briquettes, matches, lighter fluid, and hot utensils are all a danger to your dog. A good way to keep an eager dog away from the grill is to get them enough exercise prior to your barbeque. A brisk run or walk, or a long day at daycare means your dog will be calmer during the evening.

Food Safety

Of course food scraps fall to the ground, and what dog isn't a great vacuum cleaner? Not every snack is something your dog finds on the ground. Many of your guests may not be able to resist your dog's pleading eyes, so make sure you have a tin of treats nearby for those who just have to give your dog a bite.

Most foods found at a barbeque aren't suitable for dogs.

  • Salty foods such as chips can cause gas and bloating.
  • High sugar foods overwork the liver, making your dog feel sluggish.
  • The hops in beer can cause a fatal reaction called malignant hyperthermia.
  • Cooked bones from chicken or other meat can splinter or cause an obstruction.

Comfort Not all of our dogs are social butterflies and you'll know best if your dog will be comfortable and happy with the barbecue hullabaloo. For the comfort of your human guests, notify them that your four-legged friend is around before they come over. They should be made aware of any doggie house rules, such as closing doors or gates behind them. And remember, your dog can have a slumber party at Dogtopia if the barbeque thing just isn't their scene!
