I visited the Sterling Ballet Academy last week. I always see the sign when I am picking up Chick-Fil-A and was surprised at what I found. Most impressive was the founder, Ms. Tuya Tumennasan. Tuya received her ballet training at the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia. This is one of the most well-known and influential schools of classical ballet in the world. Tuya has danced at the Classical Opera and Ballet Theater in Mongolia, the National Ballet of New Jersey and the Granite State Ballet in Nashua, New Hampshire (now known as Northern Ballet Theatre), before joining the Russian Ballet Theater in Delaware as a principal dancer.
Tuya’s background is notable, so I was surprised to find that she does not pressure her dancers the way that other dance studios do. Tuya wants to make dancing a fun experience for her students so that they want to come back and dance again and again. The Sterling Ballet Academy instills not only a love of dance but also an appreciation for ballet. The curriculum of the school uses the history of dance as a pillar in its teachings.
