Herndon Neighborhoods to Compete in 'Battle of the Bottles'

The Four Seasons and Hunters Creek neighborhoods in Herndon will face off in a “Battle of the Bottles” competition this summer.

'Battle of the Bottles' is produced by the Herndon Environmental Network (HEN) in partnership with the Town of Herndon and Meadows Farms Nurseries. According to a press release, the competition's intent is to increase awareness of the value of recycling as well as participation in the town’s recycling program during the month of July.
“The Town of Herndon is delighted to work with HEN and Meadows Farms in enhancing citizens’ focus on the importance of recycling,” Herndon Mayor Lisa Merkel said in a statement.  “While only one neighborhood will be declared the ‘Battle of the Bottles’ winner, in reality both participating neighborhoods win as they both contribute to a  cleaner, greener community environment.”

During the week of June 27, volunteers from HEN are distributing fliers to residents in both neighborhoods, as well as through their respective homeowners’ associations, to raise awareness of the competition.

Herndon's Department of Public Works will weigh recycled materials collected from each neighborhood to determine which has a higher percentage increase in the volume of materials.  The neighborhood that measures the greatest percentage increase in recyclable items will win a $500 gift card from Meadows Farms Nurseries that will go toward purchasing trees, plants and flowers for neighborhood common areas.

According to HEN representative Nancy Myers, last year's competitors were the neighborhoods of Hastings Hunt and McNair Farms Landbay 2. The winning neighborhood increased their recycling by an increased weight of 18 percent, Myers said.
