Going to the Homecoming Game? Don't Forget the Canned Food!

Delegate Tom Rust's fifth annual Homecoming Food Drive will take place during the game Saturday afternoon.

Raincoat? Check. Umbrella? Check. Herndon Hornets face paint? Check. Canned food? Check!

When gathering up all your stuff to head out to watch the Herndon High Hornets take on the Thomas Edison Eagles for the big Homecoming game this Saturday, don't forget to grab a few canned food items for the annual Homecoming Food Drive.

Delegate Tom Rust (R-Herndon) will hold his fifth annual drive during the parade and game this Saturday, to benefit LINK.

LINK is a nonprofit charity that gives emergency assistance to families in need in the Herndon, Sterling and Ashburn communities.

Due to the extraordinary high demand for food, the pantry at LINK is low, and food donations are desperately needed to stock the shelves, Rust's office said this week.

Donations needed include spaghetti sauce, dried beans, canned black beans, canned chicken, canned fruit, canned chili and soups and other items.

“I have personally donated to LINK numerous times, and this is a wonderful way to help those in our community who are in need," Rust said. "Last year we collected over 600 pounds of food, and we are hoping to exceed that this year.”

Del. Rust will be collecting nonperishable food in children’s wagons along the Homecoming parade route and at the entrance to the Homecoming game this Saturday.

He will also accept donations at his legislative offices in Herndon at 730 Elden St., next to the Herndon Visitor's Center.
