PR's Winning Plays: Lessons in Best Practices from Award-Winning SVP PR Tony Wyllie of the Redskins Football Team

Using examples from his experience in the NFL, Senior VP of Public Relations for the Redskins, Tony Wyllie will offer attendees his five best practices for making winning PR plays, no matter what industry you are in. His presentation will be largely focused on media relations and cover:

  • How a public relations department can – and should – help a company or organization
  • Critical keys to success when working with the media
  • How to interact with the media for best results
  • What not to do when working with the media
  • Tricks and plays the media will use when covering you

Within each of these five main points, Tony will provide detail and real-world examples, touching on the most important components in media relations. Attendees will come away with specific ideas they can immediately incorporate into their media relations program that will contribute to their organization’s overall success.

Bio:
Senior Vice President Tony Wyllie enters his fourth season with the Redskins in 2013, now embarking upon his third decade of NFL service as a communications professional. Wyllie and his staff have earned the Pete Rozelle award, presented annually by Pro Football Writers of America to the NFL club public relations staff that consistently strives for excellence in its dealings and relationships with the media. The award is named for Rozelle, NFL commissioner from 1960-89, who started his distinguished career in sports PR. Tony has received the award five times in his career and he is the only executive in the NFL to have won the award with three different teams.

A Brooklyn native, Tony began his NFL career as a game day intern with the Houston Oilers in 1991 before working his way up the ranks of PR in the NFL over the next 20 years. Wyllie worked three years in the sports information department of Texas Southern University, where he received his degree in journalism. In 2004, Wyllie received TSU’s “Distinguished Alumnus” award. He also earned an MBA from the Jones School of Business at Rice University.  In Houston, Wyllie served on numerous Boards of Directors including the Ensemble Theatre in Houston, the March of Dimes, and the Management Leadership for Tomorrow-Houston, John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science, the Houston Texans YMCA and the Touchdown Club of Houston.
