Sterling Post Office Makes List of Possible USPS Locations to Close

The US Postal Service is considering replacing 3,700 locations with its Village Post Office concept.

While Herndon’s US Postal Service office on Grove Street won’t be touched, 3,700 other USPS locations are being considered for consolidation or liquidation.

That list includes some services at the Sterling location, 150 S. Sterling Blvd., which is being considered. USPS says its customers “have made it clear they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business.”

USPS currently has about 32,000 retail locations, not including where there are partnerships to sell postal products in grocery stores, pharmacies and other locations. Additionally, many people conduct their communications or postal business from their phones or computers, said USPS on the decision.

USPS says for locations they may close, they are considering replacing them with Village Post Offices. The village offices would be a partnership with a local business, such as grocery stores and other locations, which would offer postal products and services, like flat-rate packaging.

Freda Sauter, spokesperson for USPS, said the 3,700 locations are only a study right now and it has not been decided that they be closed yet.

“Prior to any decision we’re going to have a community meeting to listen to our customers comments and questions,” she said. She said the study will take 60 days, and the entire project will be finished in 120 days.

Sauter said post offices that are being selected for the study are being chosen based on their proximity to another postal location or a retail location that offers postal products, as well as customer demand, insufficient workload, revenue and expenses at that location.

Other locations being considered in the Northern Virginia region include the downtown Leesburg post office, Winchester and two Alexandria locations. See the full, state-by-state list.
