Letter to the Editor: Watch for Democratic Signs Disappearing

Sixty two signs have gone missing.

Dear Editor,

The surest sign of a loser is when he becomes desperate and loses his grip on reality. The Republican Party has essentially given up on Herndon finding that when voters understand the issues, Republicans can't be taken seriously. From voter suppression to employers threatening employees to pizza joint owners threatening customers, this is the story of today's Republican Party.

Locally, over the years I'm sure you've noticed political signage at the Herndon public permitted places. It seems that this year you have to look quickly before all the Democratic signs mysteriously disappear. Of course, as entitled human beings, Republicans don't need to follow rules; not even the eighth commandment. Because, even a first grader knows that taking a sign that does not belong to you is stealing. If you're interested, the current count is 62.

The Republican Party has not "given up on Herndon." The police reports in Herndon with which I am familiar all concerned Republican signs being stolen or vandalized. See also photos attached of Republican signs vandalized in McLean. 62 signs? That is an extremely high number. I hope the police were contacted. Care to prove your allegations. Louie? Sure it's not 11,324 signs stolen? Got a police report to back it up?
Ann H Csonka October 21, 2012 at 07:57 PM
Do you really expect citizens to take police time when signs usually disappear or are vandalized one at a time? Sadly, that behavior has become somewhat endemic in our land of free speech. Oh, yeah -- Louis...make that 63.

Do you think it is just possible that the early placed democrat signs were taken by someone paying attention to the spirit of state law prohibiting campaign signs on any state public property. Of course, democrats always believe the law applies to them only when they agree with it. Suggest that, if you are truly worried about the signage disappearing, you establish your own detective effort to catch any possible perpetrators in the middle of the night in the act. Don't look for me, I'll be comfortably asleep.

This afternoon between 1200-1430 a four foot Romney/Ryan sign and a smaller one were ripped off my lawn and (the larger was just taken) tossed into one of my fig trees. I reported this to the police and The Virginia Republican Alliance (VRA). VRA came to my home in full force and provided more signs (which I used to pepper my lawn), advise and resources. GOD BLESS Gene and Harry. I am hoping that the police, who said, they will have someone call me for more details next week will pull prints from the sign that was tossed ( I will request that). Its a shame that when something happens to the left everyone is in an uproar--but rip off 62+ signs no one says anything. Be interesting to see how the police handle this because at a minimum this is vandalism and possibly a felony (infringing on my First Amendment Right of Free Speech).
chefgio1 October 21, 2012 at 10:20 PM
Yes. I expect the police to protect my First Amendment Right to free speech. Its a right that is given to me under the Constitution and not one that the left keeps creating, i.e., education, abortion, birth control pills etc...these are not rights.

The signs that the VRA put up for me to replace the stolen ones--have been stolen Again!!!!!!!!! I called Fairfax County Police, again and they came over to investigate. They indicated they will follow-up and possibly pull prints from the sign that was tossed this afternoon. The Officer, gave me a good sense that if there something to be discover they will do it. He left me with a confident feeling that he will do whatever he and the Department can.

Bill - The ONLY signs I saw on golf course property on a corner of the north side of Herndon Parkway were Democrat signs. I was wondering about them being on public property...guess the Republican signs got ripped off. This type of petty hoooliganism is bipartisan....not to diminish it. Teenagers have been doing this for decades...and the lack of civility in expressing opinions this year has probably brought [chronological] adults into the process on a larger scale....not to mention the anti-signage of any type fanatics. To those that are really, really out for front lawn defense, my late Dad was my high school principal...we had to worry not only about signs being taken from our lawn, but also stuff being left on it - a garden hose is a good stand-off hooligan suppression weapon if you are willing to stand watch as is a trip wire attached to cans filled with pebbles. :)

As I noted in a reply to Bill Campenni, this type of petty hoooliganism is bipartisan....not to diminish it. Teenagers have been doing this for decades...and the lack of civility in expressing opinions this year has probably brought [chronological] adults into the process on a larger scale....not to mention the anti-signage of any type fanatics. I think that we need to take a deep breath and think before we turn this into a partisan issue. Both the Democrats and the Republicans have jerks and buffoons in their ranks...and I suspect that some of these perps are not voters either because of their age or because they are too lazy, ignorant or stupid to participate in the political process...they certainly are "legally and civility challenged" when it comes to citizenship and behavior. Take a cold garden hose to them if you really care and want satisfaction, but don't blame it on either party.

Are you sure the signs were stolen or could folks be changing their minds?
terri morgan October 22, 2012 at 11:44 AM
Mark - thank you for your posting. Louis' Letter to the Editor is one written in anger and I immediately started a response just as angry. I understand being upset, I have had several signs ripped from my yard, mostly republican. Stealing signs is a bipartisan problem, it is juvenile and there should be consequences. The bitterness in Louis' post needs to be at the perpetrators, not the republican citizens.

Am I the only one who finds this ridiculous? The country is going down the drain - in fact, the whole world is going down the drain - and people fight by stealing political signs from each others' lawns.
Mark Carolla October 22, 2012 at 01:04 PM
I got a phone call Saturday that might explain why people might indeed be changing their minds or are plain ornery. (They can't make this stuff up.) Caller: I'm working for a national research firm and want to ask you some questions... Me: (Irritated) OK...Cut to the chase...Caller: What is your date of birth? Me: I don't share that with cold callers...Caller: OK - Do you or your family work for a political party? Me: .No. Caller: How likely are you to vote in the upcoming general election: 1) Very likely 2) Likely 3) Not Likely 4) Not Likely at All? Me: I already voted. Caller: You need to answer 1,2,3,or 4. Me: You figure out the answer I told you I already voted. Caller: Yes, but you didn't answer 1,2,3 or 4. Me:I already told you I've ALREADY VOTED ...YESTERDAY...HOW LIKELY IS THAT? Caller: But you haven't answered the survey question. Me: Look, You need to tell the idiots you work for that they need to pass a basic political science course...I already told you I already voted, if that means "likely to" for the idiots you work for, that's their answer. Caller: OK, Sir, at this point with the survey being over I'm required by Federal & Virginia Law to disclose to you that this has been a Survey Conducted by the Romney for President Campaign. Me: Oh. I'm not telling you who I voted for. We have a secret ballot, but I have to plead "duh Fifth" over whether or not I voted for an idiot. A Republican family member said he got the same exact call from the DNC.
John Farrell October 22, 2012 at 01:16 PM
There is no state law prohibiting campaign sign on state public property. The 1st Amendment protects such signs just as it protects picketers on a public sidewalk. So long as they do not interfere with sight lines at intersections and the like, they are protected. Removing them is a crime. If enough are removed, it's a felony and the miscreant loses their voting rights!
John Farrell October 22, 2012 at 01:24 PM
It's shame that the survey firms that employ these minimum wage workers don't train them better to handle situations "off script." I wonder how much money is lost to such straight-jacketing.
Mark Carolla October 22, 2012 at 01:35 PM
No Bob, this isn't ridiculous...it is small town America...used to happen all the time when I was a kid. It just didn't show in the Norman Rockwell paintings. Yes, some of this might be really politically motivated...but this is mostly boorishness and hooliganism viewed through the lens of our growing lack of tolerance and thin skins in opposing political views. Instead of throwing tantrums on blogs, our neighbors of both parties might be demonstrating kindergarten behavior on each other's lawns or attributing such political behavior to vandals and delinquents.
William Campenni October 22, 2012 at 01:55 PM
Mark: That certainly was a poor survey. A more meaningful one would have been: Do you have a yard? Do you have a political sign on it? Is it a Romney or an Obama sign? Do you have at least 62 signs in your yard? Are they still there? Is the lawn in good shape? Do you have any parked cars or equipment in the yard that certain people might find offensive? Do you think that if someone finds your sign offensive, they have the right to remove it because you do not have any First Amendment rights to voice support for someone they don't like? Do you think that with the Muslim Brotherhood and their ilk demonstrating in 32 countries, with Americans being killed on US soil in Benghazi, with the US economy about to go off the sequestration cliff, with taxes about to increase for all, including a 50% increase for the poorest taxpayers, with our military to be cut to smaller numbers than they had in 1940, that people should be wasting their time worrying about Louie's yard signs?
Mark Carolla October 22, 2012 at 03:16 PM
Bill Campenni - Not only am I desolated about Louie's yard signs, but I have been awaiting a call to action from you and George to reactivate the Minutemen! Now that I'm retired I could lead a night patrol! Just kidding, Bill. But, as usual, your commentary is spot on - I just hope that whoever wins the coming election that our politicians will stop sand box fighting and striving for ideological purity on Capitol Hill and think about governing. Der Arnold (Schwarzenegger) put it succinctly a few weeks ago saying something like: "Our troops are risking all overseas for a year of their lives or more...and these cowards in Congress are too scared to vote in a manner that might not get them re-elected or won't get them donations!"
Ann H Csonka October 26, 2012 at 08:02 AM
Hey, Bob -- Ridiculous, yes. But surely not new. You don't recall the widespread vandalism of certain Town election political signs, particularly in 1988 and 1990?
