Hurricane Sandy: 4,200 Without Power in Herndon-Reston

Patch will continue to provide updates as the storm progresses.

Hurricane Sandy is beginning to pick up speed in Northern Virginia, and thousands of Herndon and Reston residents are already in the dark.

Just more than 4,100 residents have lost their power along the Fairfax County Parkway, above Elden Street and below Wiehle Avenue, according to an interactive outage map from Dominion Virginia Power.  

In Fairfax County, Dominion is reporting 33,257 outages as of 8:13 p.m.

Roads in the area have also started to close, with downed trees and power lines, as well as flooding, blocking traffic.

The following Herndon area roads have been closed as of 8:11 p.m.: 

  • 2600 block of Fox Mill Road
  • 7600 block of Tiverton Road
  • Walney Road/Poplar Tree Road/Herndon Drive
