Holiday Weekend: Big Getaway or Expensive Ride?

AAA says high gas prices not holding too many travelers back.

Summer starts in a matter of hours.

AAA of the Mid-Atlantic says higher gas prices will not deter  Virginians from traveling this Memorial Day weekend. The organization says more than one million Virginians are expected to take a trip of 50 miles or more from home, a slight increase of about 5,000 people from 2010.

While a marginally larger number of people will head out to celebrate Memorial Day this year, more will travel by air and slightly fewer will travel via automobile than did in 2010.

“All travelers are reporting that they will be more frugal with their vacation funds this year, likely due to higher gas prices, as they take advantage of historical sights, participate in fun but free outdoor activities like hiking, and shop and eat out less than in year’s past,” said AAA's Martha Mitchell Meade.

Gas prices in Virginia are averaging $3.76 a gallon, down by more than 25 cents from a few weeks ago and lower than the $3.83 national average, says AAA.
