Dec. 21: Shortest Day of the Year

Friday is the first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

The bad news for those who like daylight is we won't have much on Friday. 

Dec. 21, 2012 is the winter solstice in earth's Northern Hemisphere, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac. The sun will rise at 7:24 a.m. and set at 4:53 p.m.

The good news is days begin getting longer again on Saturday!

The sun's path will reach its southern most high noon position in the sky, directly over the Tropic of Capricorn, according to An Almanac Minute: The Winter Solstice.  The short video is attached to this article.
