Area Potters Create Works of Art for Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls raises money for Food for Others, helping feed families and individuals in need in Fairfax County.

Area potters have been busy making bowls that will be used for this year's Empty Bowls event to raise funds to fight hunger.

On April 12, the bowls will be given to attendees — along with a dinner of soup, bread and dessert — of Empty Bowls, a fundraiser organized by The Giving Circle of HOPE in support of Food for Others.

To prepare for the event, a group of 10 potters have been busy making bowls in the ceramic shop of the Reston Community Center. This group, along with others in the area, will create more than 500 bowls or plates for the event.

“Our potters are very giving of their time and show a great deal of generosity in sharing their craft,” said Deb Joder, an instructor at the center in a press release.

Food for Others provides more than 2.4 million pounds of free food to families and individuals in need in Fairfax County. Additionally, the number of students eligible for free and reduced lunches in Fairfax County has increased by 38 percent since 2008.

According to Roxanne Rice, Executive Director of Food for Others, “The cost of living in this area is enormous and with the tightened economy many of our clients are working but earn too little money to meet basic expenses. The funds we receive through the Empty Bowls event help us accomplish the mission of fighting hunger in Northern Virginia.”

Tickets for Empty Bowls are $20 per person prior to the event. Tickets at the door are $25 per person. All proceeds of tickets sales from Empty Bowls go directly to Food for Others, because the bowls and the food are donated by local artists and businesses.

The event takes place from 5:30-8 p.m. April 12 at Floris United Methodist Church, located at 13600 Frying Pan Rd., in Herndon. Tickets can be purchased by mailing a check made out to Food for Others to The Giving Circle of HOPE, PO Box 8832, Reston, VA 20195.
